Today, I wish to give you, my potential reader, a phrase that I find absolutely inspiring, a phrase that I discovered a long time ago already, and that I adopted and posted on my FB profile and wherever else I could find an appropriate place for it. It is a quote from one of the major works of Giovanni Pico della Mirandola, an Italian philosopher and humanist from the 15th century, Oratio de Ominis Dignitate (Oration on the Dignity of Man). I love the phrase though I am not a religious person, because it is powerful and beautiful. It is “Tu, nullis angustiis coercitus, pro tuo arbitrio in cuius manu te posui, tibi illam praefinies,” which I like to translate into English as “Thou that art not constrained by any barriers, by thine own free will in whose hands I have placed thee, thou definest thyself.”
